Let’s Get Lost: Baltimore, MD

Okay, I get it. Just like Delaware, Baltimore isn’t the sexiest of locations. It isn’t even high on my list of places to hit next. But my godparents will be on the East Coast in May, and I promised to head down to Maryland while they’re in town. I’ll probably spend one night with their friends (in a miniature train room, no less!), but I figure I might as well wander around Baltimore a bit before I catch the train back. Run into Omar from The Wire. You know, the usual.

I’ve actually been to Baltimore before, but it was just as a stop on one of those janky $40 buses from D.C. to New York and I was not impressed. I didn’t even count it as a visit and still haven’t colored Maryland in on my state map. But doing a little research and scouting around, I feel like I can pass a day with Baltimore, as long as he promises to be a gentleman and respect my unexplained strong dislike for crustaceans.

I’m thinking: Fells Point, which is supposed to be a quirky little town on the water that also has an Irish pub (or two. or three. What, I’m taking the train?!). Some cake? Isn’t this where they filmed that cake show where all the employees looked high? Yessss Charm City Cakes. Are you even allowed to just pop in? Order a slice?

Hampden for its giant flamingo cafe, apparently an ode to John Hughes. Brewer’s Art for a well-curated list and a beautiful interior (pictured above). Aaaaand that’s all that’s really on the docket so far. Maybe the library? Maybe some crab cakes SANS VISIBLE CRABS. Anywhere else I have to hit?
