Dying to cross more states off my list; dying to get over to Rehoboth Beach and Dogfish Head’s brewery in Milton. Soon, my precious. You might be part of the camp that thinks Delaware sounds incredibly dull on the surface (guilty!), but it turns out it actually has a pretty sweet beach and boardwalk in Rehoboth, plus a Dogfish Head brewpub.
Rehoboth’s roughly three-and-a-half hours from NYC, and getting there generally requires a car, especially in the off-season when the summer buses don’t run. Plus, you’ll definitely need the car if you have any intention of getting to the actual Dogfish Head brewery.
Summer is the high season, but go before Memorial Day and you can score hotel rooms for under $100 for two queen beds. Most of the boardwalk will be shuttered and the water will still be pretty icy, but I’m willing to sacrifice a few creature comforts for less chirruns running around.
The actual Dogfish Head Brewery is located in Milton, which is a 30-minute drive from Rehoboth. It turns out that the brewery can only provide 12-ounces of beers—which it splits into three four-ounce pours—to visitors. To its credit, it does also boast a treehouse that was salvaged from the apocalyptic wasteland that is Burning Man, so props for that. Most visitors to the brewery do the tour, get their 12-ounces, and end up staying the night in Rehoboth, where they can drink at the brewpub to their hearts’ content.
