Out of the Office: Ace Hotel

I’ve been a bit of a search for ideal freelancing spots in New York. I tend to avoid Starbucks, and like going to places with a tad more personality and tad less terrible staff (seriously, the one on third ave. by the dorms is terrible). After way too much procrasti-searching freelancing spots on Google, I settled on Ace Hotel, and let’s just say, I felt hopeless unhip. Like, I generally feel like I can front a little bit of fake coolness. I watch the requisite TV shows. I dig around for music that’s not getting constant radio play. But Ace Hotel will still always be way cooler than I can front.

I mean, just look at that photo up there. Now, dim the lights to about half that and fill it with good-looking people hunched over bright screens. Throw in an attached Stumptown Coffee with $5 cold brew. This is not a place you go in your Lululemon’s in an effort to make sure you work out later in the day because it’s too depressing to change out of your unused workout clothes. This is a place where you slap some red lipstick on your mug, make an attempt to tame your hair into something manageable, and definitely do not get caught watching the new Miley Cyrus video.

The details: the Internet was working at a crawl when I went, so it wasn’t my favorite place to open 50 billion browser tabs and get work done. But the coffee was top notch, the staff running the restaurant didn’t pressure me to order anything (they’ll come by the work tables, which have menus out), and the front desk people are generally pretty free with the wi-fi password. Also, there are plenty of non-ogres hard at work, so I imagine it’d be a pretty sweet pickup scene, if you’re into that. Just, please god, don’t show up in your workout clothes.
